Basketball prep schools, explained

Montverde Academy, IMG Academy, Sunrise Christian... These names appear in the journey of many NBA players. A prep school is a North American school with an elite basketball program, designed as a bridge between high school and college. At Propulse 8 we know this world well: our athlete Sébastien Ndour plays at Montverde Academy, one of the most respected programs in the United States.

Why go through a prep school?

  • Level of play: near-professional games against the continent's best young players, with intensive daily training.
  • Exposure: college coaches attend the games and tournaments of major programs — the most direct shortcut onto the NCAA radar.
  • Adaptation: language, culture, the American style of play, boarding life — the whole shock is absorbed before college.
  • Academics: good prep schools also structure your academic file for NCAA eligibility (see our NCAA guide).

What it costs — and available aid

Costs vary enormously: from a few thousand to over $60,000 a year at the most prestigious academies (tuition + boarding). But many programs offer financial aid and scholarships to high-potential players — athletic level can dramatically reduce the bill.

Beware of false promises: some "academies" sell a dream with no real level of play or academic follow-up. Always check the actual game schedule, the alumni placed in college programs and the academic support before committing.

How to get into a prep school

  1. A solid athletic file: recent film, stats, coach recommendations.
  2. A clean academic record: top programs also recruit serious students.
  3. Direct contacts: spots are earned through connections, tryouts and recommendations — rarely through a simple form.
  4. The right timing: rosters are built months ahead; ideally start the process a year before the intended entry.

Frequently asked questions

At what age do players join prep schools?
Generally between 15 and 19. Many international players spend one or two late-high-school years there, sometimes a post-graduate year specifically to improve their college recruiting.
Prep school or a European academy?
Both paths lead to the top but prepare for different things: prep school maximizes NCAA exposure and adaptation to the American game; the European club academy targets the local professional route. The right choice depends on your end goal — exactly the kind of decision we help families make.
Do prep schools offer scholarships?
Yes, many competitive programs offer partial or full financial aid to players with strong athletic potential. Amounts are discussed case by case, based on level and roster needs.
Does a prep school guarantee an NCAA scholarship?
No. It greatly increases exposure and development, but nothing replaces level of play and academics. Be wary of any school that "guarantees" a college scholarship.
