"Do I need an agent?" It's one of the most common questions from ambitious players — and their parents. The honest answer: it depends on your level, your goal and the timing. Here's how to see clearly, including what an agent will never do for you.
What does a basketball agent actually do?
- Athletic representation: identifying the right opportunities (colleges, pro clubs), negotiating contracts and defending your interests.
- Image and brand: building your media presence and negotiating partnerships (sponsors, NIL).
- Protection: reviewing every document before signature, checking compliance (NCAA, federations), handling admin.
- Career planning: a 5–10 year vision, not just the next contract.
When should you get an agent?
Mind the NCAA trap: rules strictly govern representation of college and pre-college players. Signing with an agent at the wrong time or under the wrong conditions can jeopardize your eligibility. That's why serious structures offer forms of guidance adapted to each player's status — family advising, career support — before formal representation.
The right moments to be surrounded: entering prep school, the college recruiting phase, the jump to the pros, or as soon as a brand reaches out.
How to choose: questions to ask
- Who are your current players, and what became of them?
- How are you paid, and on what exactly?
- Who will handle me day to day — the person in front of me, or an assistant?
- How well do you know NCAA rules / the federations that concern me?
- What happens if I want to leave?
Beware of bloated rosters: an agent with 60 players will never call you. At Propulse 8 we stand for the opposite: a roster that is selected, not accumulated — every athlete counts.
